“Hotel room was basic and the shower head was broken when I brought it to the staff attention at check out I got no satisfaction. Bed linen had a make up stain on it. The staff were run off their feet in the bar for food and breakfast the following morning. Food was lovely.”

“Some confusion over room booking which was sorted fairly quickly which appeared to be done by giving us a standyby room. However there was no toilet seat on the toilet & fan was running in the room all night despite us turning off the electricity. Nice breakfast.”

“We had a very enjoyable two night stay at the County Arms, Birr. The staff were very helpful and cheerful and the pool facilities were great for the kids to play about in. There was plenty of interesting things to see and do in the area - for example right outside the hotel is a monument marking O'Farrells field where the first all-Ireland hurling match was held! I would highly recommend going to discover the heart of Ireland for yourself.”

“Would definitely stay in again - went for a night with two young kids (8 + 6) and they loved the pool. Food in the bar was very impressive, good kids options too. Birr is a really good looking town and there's an excellent playground down the road from the hotel. The hotel is very nice but can't see how it's "4 star" - but we weren't looking for that so overall very happy.”

“We had a vey pleasnt few days at the County Arms Hotel. Good sized clean comfort able room. Good pool facilities - very accomodating staff. Nice food at rhe bar. Only minor downside was that there was a private reception in the lobby/ bar both evenings which took over the place a little and we felt a squeezed out.”

“My family & I, 2 adults & 2 kids stayed here Sat/Sun 14th/15th Nov 2015. We were attending a family reunion in the hotel. We had a family room which consisted of a queen sized bed & bunk beds. The beds were extremely comfy & the room was a good size. Both the meal at the reunion & the breakfast the next morning were delicious. We found the staff very nice & helpful particularly at reception. We thought we got good value for money. “Hi we stayed Sunday 21/6/15 very pleasant receptionist. The room was very clean and our two young boys enjoyed the bunk beds. We had a meal that night and it was very nice the staff very young and not very experience. A bus tour was also been fed. The pool was lovely we were in it the evening we arrived and next morning also. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at this hotel. It was easy to locate and breakfast was lovely.”

“Did not enjoy our stay, the reasons being: The hotel lacked atmosphere and could use an upgrade in decor Had to request a change of room as the room we were initially assigned had poor sound insulation There was constant mechanical noise all night from an unknown source In the dining room, the table across us had food underneath the table and this was prior to food service The food was mediocre at best. Wording of the menu did not match the dish presented - Why state something is 'pan fried' when it is obviously not The waiting staff could use some training on how to properly wait table The only redeeming feature was that the staff were unfailingly pleasant”

“We recently stayed in the County Arms hotel in Birr, and to be honest the worst thing about it was the appalling weather all weekend. We arrived late due to the aforementioned bad weather, only to find there was a bikers convention on that Friday night. We were dismayed, thinking as you would that the bikers were on a let all loose weekend and all the other guests would suffer. This was not the case. The bikers were very respectable fellows on the whole, keeping to themselves, and not disturbing anyone. However, as we were late, despite having an early evening dinner before we set off, we were peckish, and at 10.10pm we asked if it was possible that we could get sandwiches/soup or anything at all? We were told quite abruptly that the kitchens were closed and food was over. We asked for take out menus from take out restaurants that would deliver as the hotel is quite central only a short walk into the town centre. We were told they had none. Several young people were seated next to us, and one was the singer/guitarist in the bar for the evening, one got the impression they were family or family friends, as it is a family run hotel. Food in the form of finger food was served to their table ten minutes after we were told the kitchen had closed, we looked enviously and ravenously as they ate their fill and left a lot uneaten. We complained to the staff at the bar who blank faced us for any explanations as to why some people were eating while we could get nothing.. We were the paying guests. Simply shouldn't have happened. As a hotel employee, shall we say, it wouldn't have happened in my very, very busy Airport hotel. All in all, what was good: the leisure centre hit the mark. The bar man who improvised and tried to make me the cocktail I wanted was helpful, the receptionist was professional, the room was clean, if not fantastic. I would say more 3 star than 4 all in all. There was no stopper in the sink and no toilet brush, and with no room service menu, this to me is a non-brainer......as far as I am aware all 4 stars need to have a room service menu??????”

“Hi, It as a clean hotel with spacious bedrooms, and it is a perfect place for a family with small kids.The food was very enjoyable and in the reasonable price.The gardens was beautiful and our little boy just loved to play there. The pool was one of the cleanest and best pools I've seen in any place we have stayed before. We would recommend this hotel to anyone and everyone:)”

“Fantastic customer service. Great space in family room kids loved it. We swam every evening and the lady who tended to us was superb nothing was too much trouble and she allowed us to borrow swim aids which made the children feel safer. Food was of a very high standard in the bar and the children's menu was the best I've seen with lots of alternatives to the norm of sausages and chips. The only disappointment was the evening meal included in the price of our break there was little choice and extra charges for some choices. Overall a fantastic few days away”

“On request for bigger family room, the staff were helpful. Family room was spacious and pool was good. Found the service was very slow over the bank holiday weekend. Evening meal on the Sunday - the meals were cold on arrival but was resolved on complaining to staff. Breakfast service was annoyingly slow on the Sunday. Bar staff was also very slow. Would not recommend this hotel to friends unless they radically improve the service levels.”

“We stayed for 1 night B&B and a two course evening meal for 2 people which cost 98 euro booked on the lidl breaks page..It was excellent value. the staff at reception were very friendly and we discovered we had several acquaintances in common which proves what a small place Ireland really is. the room was very clean and the toiletries were of good quality. the evening meal was very good and the dining room overlooks the gardens which are adorned with lights adding enormously to the ambience. the breakfast was the standard cereals, juices, cheese etc and the menu offered various options other than the full Irish such as smoked salmon and scrambled eggs. We very much enjoyed our stay although we never found the time to use the leisure centre. we would envisage returning Again.”

Food in the bar very good, daily specials and a wide range of childrens options all reasonably priced. All staff helpful and friendly. Very central location and an ideal spot to explore the area. Overall, good value and high standard. No kids club when we were there though.”

It was hard to choose there were lots of nice options. There was a great choice for breakfast. The pool was fantastic. The kids loved the swimming toys. The kiddies corner was safe. The water was of a nice temperature. The changing rooms were clean. We enjoyed the playground just down the street from the hotel and also the treehouse at Birr Castle. We'll definitely be back for another stay!”

“Stayed in county arms hotel weekend 12 th to 14 april 2013,would not recommened staying here.Room no. 269 a large family room, was not suitable for a couple. Bathroom had a blocked handbasin which caused a very bad smell,lots of black hairs on floor, badly stained carpet in bedroom,window covered in nose and finger prints,cobwebs in varous areas of room,throw on bed ripped and stained.It took two complaints before housekeeping cleared the blockage in the bathroom.All these problems present the hotel in a very poor light,which is a pity because most of the staff are helpful and friendly.In fact the only nice thing about this hotel is the staff.”

“We enjoyed our stay here, we did have a couple of issues but overall it was a pleasant experience. Pros: The staff are fantastic, every single person we encountered was very friendly and willing to help. The pool is great, kids loved it and we spent hours in there. Was a bit on the cold side but still enjoyable. Just maybe a suggestion for a few floating toys? Family room was a good size, we had a room with bunk beds and the kids loved it. Breakfast was good and plentiful. Cons: The food in the bar was dreadful, and expensive for what we got. We spent nearly â‚¬60 on dinner and we were sorely disappointed, it was far too expensive and was clearly just reheated frozen food, bland and dry. The kids meals were meagre. I would recommend going out of the hotel and finding somewhere else to eat. There was no hot water in the changing rooms of the pool or in our room for a good few hours, I had to have a freezing cold shower after the pool and I couldn't wash the kids at all. We called reception and they were aware of it and it was sorted by the time we got back from dinner. Overall I would recommend for a family break, just go elsewhere for dinner.”

Kids loved the swimming pool particularly the whirlpool. We also ate in the bar which was reasonable. 50 Cent for large glass of lemonade for the kids was also reasonable and a nice change from the usual â‚¬2 plus. Would certainly stay again. “Our stay at the County Arms Hotel was very poor, the reception was very warm and very welcoming but unfortunatly that was the best a 4 star hotel could offer, after check in we went to our room and found that the handle on our door was broken and the heating was not working. Reception was very quick to get it sorted tho it was only the heating got sorted as the handle still remained broke on our departure. The room was very basic with 1 double bed and a bunk bed for the kids the bed was not made up after 1st night. Not much eles to say not realy a 4 star standard. in our package we had a 2 night stay B & B with 1 evening meal with kids under 12 stay free but pay for meals, the food that was served was very low standard the breakfast was not cooked to order and was surved very quickly. The Bar menu and resturant menu was very poor as there was not enough choices with only a few to choose from and if you did see somthing you liked there was a supplement to pay so not realy a free. “we had a very nice weekend in the county arms on st patricks weekend. It has a lovely swimming pool and is very child friendly. We were disappointed there was no housekeeping service unless you asked for it. We had to call down to reception for clean towels. Also there was no hot water on the night arrived and despite telling reception about it nothing was done about it.”

We had a lovely stay, we had a family room with queen bed, bunkbeds and a travel cot for the baby, the rooms were spotless and cosy. We spent most of the second day in the pool which was also lovely, the staff both were very friendly and great with the kids. We will definitely be returning to this Hotel again sometime soon :-) (Dublin) x4 star from us.”

“Last weekend my sisters and I stayed at the County Arms Hotel in Birr. We had a most enjoyable stay and were made feel welcome by both management and staff. Our room was lovely, comfortable and clean. (well done, house-keeping) We enjoyed a spa treatment and massage and again were treated so well by staff. It was my sister's birthday and all at the hotel made it so special. The food was excellent as were the dining room staff. I would not hesitate to recommend this hotel and hopefully will be back myself in the near future.”

“I was very disappointed with my stay at the County Arms Hotel. It did not live up to the images on the website. I was surprised to see everything was nailed down from kettle to hairdryer. The shower broke down on the first use. The cleaning lady repaired it by screwing it back together. The chamber maids did not speak English and repeatedly walked into the room despite being asked not to. I was served a 2 inch nail in my salad for which there was no apology: the young waiter blushed heavily and retreated into the kitchen. I waited expectantly for an apology as the receptionist and head chef debated within earshot of the restaurant. This was followed by a frenzy of cleaning activity in the kitchen using copious amounts of bleach which smothered the restaurant making it impossible to remain. Grateful that I had noticed the nail before consumption, the bill was paid without receiving an apology or acknowledgement. The Spa treatments were unavailable as they had to be booked days in advance (which wasn't noted on the website). Access to the pool and gym were limited as local classes seemed to have it booked out. We are a family of 5 adults who had looked forward to a luxury break for a special occasion and were very disappointed with the County Arms Hotel.”

“We stayed for 2 nights with our 3 year old son in a family room...lovely clean room, full breakfast each morning, superb staff,..very helpful with information on things to do in the area for toddler's..a receptionist even got bread from the kitchen to give to my toddler to feed the duck's in a near by lake!!All in all we found it superb value for money with extremely accommodating staff & very child friendly with a fab leisure complex...loads to do in the 2 days we were there.”

The hotel is in a great location- within walking distance of everything Birr has to offer (cafes, adventure sports, shopping). The spa treatments were very reasonably priced for a hotel. The staff went out of their way to ensure you have the most pleasurable stay possible! Would highly recommend this hotel to anyone- old or young!”

“we spent 3 nights in county arms hotel to celebrate my husbands 50th birthday last week... we had a brilliant time. we stayed with our 4 daughters for 2 nights and they especially loved the leasure centre. on the saturday night there was about 22 of us staying and we had a blast. the hotel was very clean, the staff were very friendly and couldnt do enough to help us. the food was fab and the atmosphere in the bar was excellent. i would recommend this hotel for a family break or a break away with friends. absolutely brilliant.”

The room, if it was a falimy room, was very small for 4 people and not as it looks like on the website. I would not think that this is a 4 star hotel, however the staff were very friendly and welcoming, the leisure is lovely and the food was very nice and reasonably priced. JS”

The only complaint was that we booked this hotel because they advertised entertainment for the kids on weekends and school holidays yet we were there for 3 nights over the easer weekend and there was NOTHING available for children. What they did advertise was a kids camp that was starting on easter monday which was no good to us as we were checking out that day”

“stayed there over the easter ,room was clean ,and hotel was nice but i wouldn't give it four stars ,food that evening well i thought it was a bit unfair there was a choice of four starters two of them had supplements 3 euro for spring rolls and the other had 4 euro supplement , then there was the main courses five choices two of them had supplements one of them 7 euro and other a 9 euro supplement what a joke. well the real joke was the breakfast ,arrived and after 15 mins nobody can to us to take our order so i went up to see a ladie at top of restaurant and she then sent somebody down to take my order ,then people all around us where getting there breakfast that placed there order after us ,so after 45 mins in total we all walked out . when we went to reception about this there was no manager on duty ,so they then sent a waiter from restaurant and he told me that i should have shouted a bit more so we checked out and went our merry way NO BREAKFAST.”

Although the decor is a bit tired, inside and out, and could do with a lick of paint (plain neutral colour I suggest...), the rooms were fine and the staff very friendly and helpful . We had a meal as part of our Lidl-break deal and I have to say it was excellent. WIne list was limited but not expensive and perfectly adequate. There was a group playing in the bar the night we were there (saturday night); they were entertaining and served to keep us in the hotel rather than wander further afield. We didnt use the pool / spa so cant comment on those. There were 2 functions going on in the hotel the night we were there but we were not disturbed by these in any way in the bedrooms. The hotel is not luxurious as claimed, however, for the price we paid, i could not fault it at all and I wish them well.”

“Hotel room was basic and the shower head was broken when I brought it to the staff attention at check out I got no satisfaction. Bed linen had a make up stain on it. The staff were run off their feet in the bar for food and breakfast the following morning. Food was lovely.”

“Some confusion over room booking which was sorted fairly quickly which appeared to be done by giving us a standyby room. However there was no toilet seat on the toilet & fan was running in the room all night despite us turning off the electricity. Nice breakfast.”

“We stayed for a weekend break with our 2 boys in a family room. The room was perfect with bunk beds for the kids. The hotel is lovely and clean. Staff were friendly and food was good. The boys loved the pool and there is plenty to do in Birr which is a really nice town.”
